About Us
Who, what, when, where and why– Food and Fun!
It all started nine years ago in 2001 when a man from Saint John named Ross Mavis and his wife, Willa, attended a similar food festival in Grant, Florida. The annual event attracted about 100,000 people to the tiny seaside town. They were both really amazed and they thought Saint John should offer its own food festival.
From 2002 to 2003 the Fundy Food Festival was held at the Saint John Arts Centre. Once people started hearing about the festival and the crowds started increasing they decided they needed a bigger location. As well as the growing need for increased power and equipment prompted the search for a more suitable location. Harbour Station became the site for the 2004 Festival which brought in more that 3000 visitors. 2005 saw the Festival move to Market Square. This location brought it's own vibrancy to the event.
Many local celebrities have participated in the festival. In past years the Chief of Police, Butch Cogswell made an appearance, as did the Mayor of Grand Bay, Grace Losier.
Inl 2008 we continued to grow and diversify. The one day event became unfolded over three. The focus remained food and fun but the spirit of multiculturalism remained the overriding factor.
The 2009 Festival was again revamped to reflect the diversity of the Festival. It still featured food from Japanese sushi to Iranian pastries to Jamaican patties and West African stews – a world of wonderful food was offered. Alongside domestic vendors more than 20 area restaurants serving their specialties attended the now upscale evening event. Due to the overwhelming response to the style and format of last year's festival (a sold event), the 2010 Festival will once again be held from 5:30 to 9:30 at the Marc Polo Cruise Terminal. A world of food, wine and beer vendors, entertainment and of course THE CHEF's auction will all be a part of this year's event. The Fundy Food Festival remains a excellent venue to present your culinary delights to the community. 2009-2010 Board of Directors Peter Smit Proprietor, happinez wine bar Margret Begner Proprietor, Opera Bistro Craig Pinhey, Wine consultant, writer & sommelier Kate Wallace Arts and entertainment editor, Telegraph-Journal Mel Norton Lawyer, Lawson & Creamer Peter Bourque Commercial Risk Specialist, Mitchell McConnell Insurance Ltd.
